ABOUT OUR MUSIC SCHOOL
We are a Ministry funded music school offering affordable small group lessons in a wide range of instruments designed to spark and grow your children’s love and interest in music.
We have been operating in Whakatane for over 30 years and our classes are taught by skilled and qualified musical tutors, with a passion for children’s musical education.
Enrolment takes place at the beginning of the year and predominantly offer classes for children ages 9-12, with some exceptions.

OUR TUTORS

YVONNE OSBORNE
I am a registered teacher and up until the end of last year was teaching music at Trident High School.
I have taught violin for the Music School since 2009. This year I will also teach keyboard. I am the conductor of the Community orchestra and also play the violin in the orchestra. I play the piano for my church and am going to be playing keyboard for our school show, and the Whakatane theatre. I have a passion for music and love to be involved with others making music.

TOM BAYLISS
The saxophone is one of the closest sounding instruments to the human voice, and the fingering is almost the same as a recorder.
I have played in groups ranging from operatic orchestras to Jazz, Rock, Country and Renaissance ensembles so I play a wide range of music. I am largely self taught and see my role as teaching everyone in such a way that they can teach themselves

BRIAN WADDELL
This will be my 5th year of drumming instruction with the children's music school.
Classes include practical instruction on the drum set and a grounding in rhythmic notation, so the students end up with both the ability to follow a written drum part, or play by ear in most styles.

CHRISTER THACKERAY-COURTNELL
I obtained my ATCL Diploma Level 4 (Recital in Clarinet) in December 2006, in Hamilton NZ.
I enjoy playing and listening to music of different genres. I am a member of the Whakatane Community Orchestra, and I am looking forward to teaching Clarinet and Recorder this year. Music is a big part of my life, and I am looking forward to sharing my enthusiasm with others.

JOSEPH FORD
I'm Joseph Ford.
I live in Whakatane with my family.
I work at Edgecumbe College as a Counsellor and at Trident High School as a Guitar tutor.
I have been teaching guitar at EBOP children's Music school for several years and enjoy it.

HĀNI TOTOREWA
Ko Hāni Totorewa tōku ingoa
Nō Rangiriri ahau
I currently teach puoro (music) at Te Wharekura o Ruatoki & Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Orīni.
The kutā (guitar) is my first instrument and I am pleased to show techniques, tips and methods for learning guitar.

KAPERIERA HUGHES
I am the former musical director for Matamata brass band leading them to win the 2021 championship D grade section.
I have 6 years experience as session trumpet player for reggae bands including well known 'Three houses down', and '1814'
I enjoy teaching the brass students at EBOP Children's Music School.

SHARON VAN DER HULLE
I have been playing the flute for many years and also recently started playing piano again. Music has always been a big part of my life.
I work at Edgecumbe College in Learning support and also teach Flute. I love working with students and really look forward to my first year teaching Flute/Fife for the Children’s Music School.
